Braille Institute trains the senses
Retaining independence important goal when eyesight fades

Alyce Penhollow, a retired nurse, suffers from macular degeneration and is legally blind. At 85, she is an attractive and active older adult. Penhollow is one of many who have benefitted from the services offered by the Braille Institute in San Diego, where she has learned skills to help her handle her visual limitations.

   
Penhollow attends classes, borrows audio books, and helps others who attend the Institute's programs. "Going there helps me cope, and not let it get me down," she said.
