     [Patricia Morgan note] A story of the death of Abijah has been handed down in the family - "he had gone to sea and never returned".
About 1970 the 1860 New York census was published in its alphabetized form and, lo and behold, the was Abijah resurected from a watery grave. It seems that he had gone to Orleans County where he is found living with another women styled as his wife. Whether or not this was ever formalised I havn't found out as I can find neither divorce or marriage papers for him.
Nevertheless, he died in Ridgeway, Orleans, NY in 1892. His death certificate shows his birthplace and the names of his mother & father.
Recently I found a brag book of Abijah's brother, William, in which he describes their father, Dudley, as dying at sea on a return trip from the West Indies. So the "dying at sea" was true - just attributed to the wrong generation
