Whilst capitaining the Sierra Nevada she struck a mud-bank whilst entering the dock at Liverpool, England on 12 April 1885. The ship broke up and became a wreck. The owners sued the dock company for damages.
He was principle witness and was complimented for his straightforward, manly testimony
