[Family.ged]

According to family oral history, Fred hit his stepmother, Almina
Wiltse, with a stick of firewood when she was whipping one of his
sisters. Thinking that he had killed her, he joined the Union Army
for the first of three enlistments.
At the close of the war, he was an orderly sergeant of Company G in
which he had been comissioned 2nd lieutenant by the governor of Iowa,
but he was not mustered into service as such. He took part in the
Seige of Vicksburg and the battles of Port Gibson, Black River Bridge
Charge, Champion Hills, and Jackson, Miss. He also served at Spanish
Fort, Fort Blakely, and Mobile, Ala.
He returned to his family, then living in Clayton Co., Iowa, and
married. He acquired some land, but later moved to Madison Co., Neb.
to establish a lumber and construction business there.
He was elected as a Republican to the position of Madison Co.
Treasurer, but was held out of office for a year by his Democratic
opponents. Ultimately, the Nebraska Supreme Court awarded him the
office. He was re-elected in 1883. Later, he was elected county clerk
and served from 1889 to 1893. In 1904, he was elected to the state
legislature, where he served one or two terms. He was also appointed
postmaster to the Battle Creek Post Office by President Theodore
Roosevelt, and resigned that position in 1910 when he moved to Cherry
Co., where he served as postmaster of the Big Creek post office. He
then moved to Neligh, Neb., remarried, and served as postmaster
there.
Sometime after 1915, he moved to Madison, Neb., where he was active
in the Presbyterian Church and served as post commander of the local
post of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Took part in the battles of the seige of Vicksburg and the battles of
Fort Gibson; Black River Bridge Charge; Champion Hills; Jackson
Hills, Mississippi; and Spanish Fort, Fort Blakely, and Mobile,
Alabama.
In the summer of 1983, the gravemarkers and sites of Fred and wife
Emily Bartlet were viewed by Emily Martha (DeWald) Demon, daughter of
Margaret Hope Richardson and/or her sister Bertha, and reported to be
in good condition.
